residential garden design

Your garden is as much a part of your house as your kitchen, dining room or living room. It's a space that can lend itself to any occasion, whether it's entertaining friends and family, taking a break from the screen, 'working out' in the fresh air, or curling up with a good book. Just as for the interior of the house, the colours, textures and use of space in your garden should be an authentic reflection of your tastes and lifestyle. And it should look fabulous, whether viewed from inside or out, and at any time of year. As the designer, it's my role to combine these elements in a cohesive scheme that brings balance, beauty and practicality to your garden.

Family friendly 'hide-and-seek' garden

family friendly ‘hide-and-seek’ garden, cheltenham

Starting with a blank canvas in a modern housing development, this project aimed to create a fun and vibrant space with something to offer children, grown-ups and wildlife alike.

The introduction of colourful, pollinator-friendly planting and a small pond soften the space and welcome wildlife into the garden. A trampoline, stepping stone pathway, under-tree den and wigwam provide the adventure - all shielded from view by soft grasses. For more sedate relaxation, a seating area beneath a large pergola is angled to make the most of the afternoon and evening sun.

Low maintenance new build garden

low-maintenance new build garden, thornbury

The client had recently moved into a newly built house with a young family, and was looking for a low maintenance garden with year-round interest.

The design includes raised borders filled with reliable and colourful flowering plants, ornamental trees for screening and interest, and a new patio and seating area with water feature to catch the morning and evening sun.

contemporary terrace garden

contemporary terrace garden, prestbury

Built in 2010, this contemporary property includes sunken terraces accessed from the lower ground floor, as well as expansive roof terraces accessed from the first floor.

The garden design incorporates multiple entertaining spaces to encourage an inside/outside style of living. Existing hard landscaping has been softened with feature trees, raised planters and turf. Subtle lighting has been introduced to highlight focal points, open up spaces for night time use and create depth to the garden when viewed from the interiors.

Hillside garden with views

hillside garden with views, cirencester

The client wanted to bring colour and fragrance around the house, and create spaces for entertaining.

The design includes terraces packed with lavender from which the surrounding views can be enjoyed. A new woodland protects the property from road noise, and a walled garden creates a haven from deer and rabbits to plant cutting flowers and vegetables.

Traditional cotswold garden

traditional cotswold garden, chalford

An early nineteenth century woollen mill, this cotswold stone property is positioned on the slopes above Chalford.

Native trees are positioned to frame the views of and from the property, and merge the boundaries of the garden with the landscape beyond. Shade-tolerant planting provides year-round structure and interest, with a colour palette to complement the cotswold stone.

Small village centre garden

small village centre garden, slimbridge

A small garden in the centre of Slimbridge. The client’s brief was to create privacy and a sense of calm, making the most of the space.

The design includes a path that weaves between raised borders and a generous pond, connecting two terraces to make the most of the morning and evening sun. Birch and pleached hornbeam trees provide screening while taking up minimal space.
